Description
Muddy Buddies, also known as Puppy Chow, are a classic no-bake snack made with Chex cereal, melted chocolate, creamy peanut butter, and a dusting of powdered sugar for a satisfyingly crunchy treat.
Ingredients
- 8 cups Chex cereal (or a mix of Rice Chex and Corn Chex)
- 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
Prepare the Cereal:
- Measure 8 cups of Chex cereal into a large bowl and set aside.
Melt the Chocolate Mixture:
- In a medium microwave-safe bowl or on the stovetop, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Heat in short bursts (15–30 seconds), stirring after each interval, until the mixture is melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Coat the Cereal:
- Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Gently stir until every piece is evenly coated.
Apply the Powdered Sugar:
- Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake vigorously until all the cereal pieces are lightly and evenly dusted.
Cool and Set:
- Spread the muddy buddies out on a sheet of wax paper. Allow them to cool completely so the coating sets firmly.
Serve and Store:
- Enjoy immediately, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
Notes
Cereal Choice: Use fresh Chex cereal (or your chosen mix) to ensure maximum crunch; stale cereal may result in a softer texture.
Melting Technique: Heat the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in short bursts (15–30 seconds) with frequent stirring to prevent burning and achieve a smooth consistency.
Cooling Before Coating: Let the melted mixture cool slightly before adding powdered sugar to avoid clumping and to maintain a dry, crunchy finish.
Customization: Adjust the amount of powdered sugar based on your preference and feel free to add mix-ins like M&M’s, crushed candies, or a pinch of sea salt.
Storage: Store the finished treat in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or freeze for up to two months for longer preservation.
